James L. Waltz, Judge (Ret.)
Over four decades of legal and judicial experience, including 23 years on the Orange County Superior Court family law bench.
- Education. B.S. Business Administration, California State University, Northridge (1976); J.D., Whittier Law School (1979).
- U.S. Army JAG, Germany. Commissioned Captain; approximately 150 criminal trials, with equal time as prosecutor and defense counsel.
- U.S. Department of Justice, Los Angeles. Prosecuted organized crime with the Strike Force.
- Private practice, 18 years. Criminal and civil litigation in state and federal courts; appointed appellate counsel for the Ninth Circuit.
- 2002 · Commissioner. Orange County Superior Court Family Law panel as Child Support Commissioner; helped develop bench guides on establishing and enforcing child support.
- 2008 · Judge. Appointed to the Orange County Superior Court bench, serving in family law until retirement. Presided over the full spectrum of family law matters, including complex and long-cause cases.

Judge Waltz was instrumental in advancing the creation of a dedicated department for complex family law matters and presided over that department for several years; one such case extended over 41 days of trial. He also presided over the parental termination calendar for seven years, handling some of the most sensitive and consequential matters before the court.
